An IP address is a unique identification number that is attributed to a device that is connected to a computer network, using the internet. IP stands for “Internet Protocol” which refers to the rules governing the format of data sent through the internet or local network. IP addresses are an identifier that allows users of devices to send information between devices on a network.
An IP address is composed of numbers, separated by dots. Three dots separate four sets of numbers. An example of an IP address could be 146.30.222.16. IP addresses are allocated to devices by the Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA).
