Something gratuitous is something that is done voluntarily or for free. For example, anything given by some person to another without consideration is considered gratuitous. Grantors who gratuitously transfer property to another party are subject to the federal gift tax.
In common parlance, gratuitous can also refer to something excessive or lacking in justification.
