Blue flu is a euphemistic term referring to a bargaining tactic in which law enforcement officers call in sick en masse to circumvent prohibitions against police strikes. The District of Columbia, for example, criminalizes organized police strikes. In light of such laws, police officers have historically used blue flu as a substitute tactic to protest labor conditions or policy changes.
